In 1993, President Bill Clinton signed the National and Community Service Trust Act,
which established the Corporation for National and Community Service and brought a full range of
domestic community service programs under the umbrella of one central organization, AmeriCorps.

education, public safety, health, and the environment.

  • Since 1994, more than 400,000 men and women have provided needed assistance
to millions of Americans across the nation through their AmeriCorps service.

My service in AmeriCorps was affiliated with the non-profit organization, the Palm Beach County Literacy Coalition. To view its web site, click on the picture above.

In August 2005 I joined Literacy AmeriCorps in West Palm Beach, Florida. I had just graduated from college with a degree I did not want to use, and I needed a change in my life. My primary service was tutoring English and non-English speaking high school students in reading, but I also started a dance program for young girls, and assisted with a family literacy program. AmeriCorps changed my life personally and professionally and placed me on the path to becoming an educator. To view more pictures from my service year, click on "AC Slides" below.
